Refreshment that you will definitely love
Iced tea is one of the most popular summer drinks. It quenches thirst, refreshes the body and mind, and – when made from high-quality loose tea – provides your body with valuable nutrients. Once you enjoy it at home, you will never want anything else.
Where did iced tea come from?
The origin of iced tea dates back to the United States, where it has a tradition of more than a century. It was popularized by a certain Richard Blechynden, a representative of the English tea company. In 1904, he tried to promote Indian tea at the World's Fair in St. Louis, USA. But due to the extreme heat, no one wanted the hot drink. So Blechynden improvised - he added ice cubes to the tea. And iced tea suddenly became a hit.
Today, iced tea (as Americans call it) is a staple – it accounts for up to 80% of total tea consumption in the US. Whether you choose classic black or green tea, a fruit blend or rooibos, with a little ice and imagination you can always conjure up the perfect summer drink.
How to make homemade iced tea?
Preparing iced tea is simple, you just need to remember that it is mixed with ice after brewing - so it should be stronger than regular tea.
Procedure:
Pour 10 g of loose tea (approx. 8 heaped teaspoons) into 600 ml of water at a temperature of 90 °C.
Steep for 5 minutes and then drain.
Prepare a 1-liter carafe or jug, which you fill 2/3 with ice (approx. 400 g)
Slowly pour hot tea over ice – it will cool quickly and you won't need a refrigerator.
Add lemon, orange, mint or lemon balm slices to taste.
Serve iced tea in clear glasses, where its color will stand out beautifully. It's perfect for picnics, garden parties, or as a refreshing drink on a hot day at work.
TIP: If your tea becomes cloudy and not beautifully clear, add a pinch of baking soda to the still hot infusion and stir well.
