This variety is highly prized for its extraordinary aroma and complexity, which are enhanced by the high altitude of 1,700–2,000 metres above sea level and the ideal microclimatic conditions of Colombia’s Huila region.The origin of this coffee traces back to the Gesha Mountain area in Ethiopia, from which it takes its name. As coffee plants were relocated from the local wild forests through Costa Rica and later to Panama, the name evolved into Geisha, which is now more widely used, although both Gesha and Geisha are correct. This relocation transformed what was once an unremarkable coffee into a true legend, following its surprising victory at the Best of Panama competition in 2004. Panamanian farmers were the first to truly master the cultivation of this variety under extreme conditions.Geisha requires very specific growing conditions – high altitude, sufficient air humidity and exceptional care, including shading, fertilisation and multiple selective harvests, as its cherries ripen very slowly and unevenly. Even when all these requirements are met, yields remain very low, which adds to its exclusivity and drives both its price and global demand.The flavour profile of Geisha is highly distinctive, often revealing a complex combination of fruit, floral notes, spices, honey or vanilla.
