Milk Thistle, 100 g

In folk tradition, milk thistle was associated with protection and purity. According to an old legend, the characteristic white marbling on its leaves comes from a drop of the Virgin Mary’s milk, which is also the origin of the name “milk thistle”.In scientific literature, milk thistle is mentioned in connection with themes such as digestion, natural defence mechanisms and overall vitality. In accordance with EU legislation, however, we cannot state any health effects of herbs.The fruits of milk thistle are naturally very hard, which is why it is traditionally recommended to crush them lightly before use so that their natural flavour and aroma develop more fully. It is best to crush them just before preparation, ideally in a mortar or another non-metallic container – this recommendation comes from herbal tradition, which holds that metal may influence the resulting aroma, though not the safety of the herb.The crushed fruits can be used to prepare an infusion with a mild, nutty and slightly earthy taste. Milk thistle is also often added to herbal blends or cold dishes such as porridge, yoghurt or muesli, where its natural character stands out beautifully. Crushed seeds are best consumed soon after preparation, as they lose their aroma more quickly. The herb should be stored in a dry and dark place.

Use 6 g (approx. 2 heaped tsp) of crushed berries per 250 ml of freshly boiled water and leave to infuse for 20 min., then strain. Alternatively, take 3 g (1 tsp) before a meal by consuming with a sufficient amount of water. Recommended amount 1-2 times a day. Not suitable for children, pregnant and lactating women.
